The December holidays aren’t just for humans this year—let’s spread some love to animals, especially those who might need a little extra help this month. Thank you for celebrating The Pawtectors’ Kindness Club’s annual “25 Days of PETMAS” with us!
This year, our theme is Random Acts of Kindness! Winter can be tough for our feathered friends to find food, so we’ve made them part of our superhero kindness missions. To help, we’ve put together a fun and easy Birdseed Ornament recipe that you and your kids can make together. Plus, at the end of this post, you’ll find more creative DIY ideas for edible bird treats to try!
Before we dive into the fun, let’s talk safety! For all our Pawtectors who might be reading this, safety is always priority #1. Cooking and DIY activities are Pawtector missions that MUST have adult or guardian supervision—no exceptions! Pawmise us you’ll team up with your grown-up. Trust us, you’ll create amazing treats and wonderful memories together!
Just like the Pawtectors’ Program, which welcomes kids and teens of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, we wanted this activity to show love for all kinds of animals. The PawSquad Team came through with a fun, easy, and safe DIY treat for our feathered friends outside.

BIRDS: DIY HOLIDAY Birdseed Ornament
Spread some holiday cheer to your feathered friends this winter! These birdseed ornaments are super easy and quick for your superhero kids to make. They can last up to 45 days in an airtight container—but let’s be honest, the birds will probably enjoy a feast by morning!
You can use any shapes to make these ornaments—stars, hearts, circles, you name it! Imagine how SUPER cool and festive your backyard will look when you unleash your creativity. Pawtectors, let your inner superhero shine and turn your outdoor space into a winter wonderland for birds!
Here are some other simple ways kids can be superheroes for backyard birds this winter:
- Refill Feeders Regularly: Keep bird feeders stocked with seeds and suet to provide food during cold months.
- Provide Fresh Water: Set out a shallow dish of water and check that it hasn’t frozen.
- Create Shelter: Build or hang birdhouses or leave brush piles for roosting.
- Make DIY Treats: String popcorn and cranberries or create pinecone feeders with peanut butter and seeds.
- Plant Native Shrubs: Grow plants that produce berries for birds to eat all winter long.
- Avoid Using Pesticides: Keep outdoor spaces safe for birds to forage.
