Rabbits are much more than cute pets. They’re intelligent, social animals with their own personalities, needs, likes, dislikes — and boundaries.
And bringing one into your family is a big commitment.
So whether you already love rabbits, are dreaming about adopting one someday, or simply want to learn more about them, let’s hop into 10 things every kid should know about bunnies.
🐰 One Important Thing First: A Bunny Is Never a Surprise Gift
Rabbits are sometimes given as gifts, especially around Easter. But an animal should never be an impulse purchase or surprise.
A rabbit may be part of your family for 10 years or more and will need proper food, safe living space, exercise, enrichment, veterinary care and attention throughout their life.
Learning what an animal needs before bringing them home is one of the kindest things we can do.
🌱 1. Rabbits Have BIG Personalities
Quiet doesn’t mean boring!
Rabbits can be curious, playful, affectionate, independent, mischievous, shy, bold — or a little bit of everything.
Just like people, every rabbit is an individual. Spending time with a rabbit before adopting can help your family find one whose personality and needs are a good match for your home.
🌱 2. Rabbits Can Form Amazing Bonds with People
Rabbits can learn to recognize the people they trust and may come running to greet them, follow them around or simply enjoy hanging out nearby.
But here’s something important: not every rabbit wants to be picked up or cuddled.
Being a great rabbit guardian means learning their way of showing affection and respecting when they want space.

There’s a lot happening behind those adorable noses!
Rabbits can learn routines, recognize voices, respond to their names and even learn simple behaviors and tricks through positive reinforcement.
Giving them opportunities to think, explore and play helps keep both their bodies and their brains happy.
🌱 4. Rabbits Can Learn to Use a Litter Box
Yep — rabbits can often be litter trained!
Providing the right setup and patiently teaching good habits can make sharing your home with a bunny much easier.
But rabbits also love to dig and chew — perfectly natural rabbit behaviors. Families need to bunny-proof areas where rabbits explore and provide safe things for them to chew.
🌱 5. Rabbits Need Room to Hop, Play & Explore
A rabbit needs much more than a small cage.
They need safe space where they can stretch, hop, stand up, explore, play and exercise every day.
They also need places to hide and relax when they want some quiet time.
Think of it this way: their living space is their home — not just somewhere to keep them.

That tiny bunny can be part of your family for many years.
With proper care, domestic rabbits can often live 8–12 years or longer.
That means adopting one is a commitment that can last through elementary school, middle school, high school — and maybe beyond!

Are we prepared to care for this animal throughout their entire life?

Rabbit rescues and animal shelters can help families learn about individual rabbits, understand their care needs and decide whether rabbit adoption is truly the right fit.

Cartoons have given carrots some excellent bunny PR. 🥕😂
But rabbits need a properly balanced diet, including plenty of hay, along with appropriate fresh foods and other nutrition recommended for them.
They also need fresh water, enrichment, regular cleaning and veterinary care from a veterinarian experienced with rabbits.
And just like cats and dogs, rabbits should generally be spayed or neutered as part of responsible care.
🌱 10. The Kindest Thing You Can Do Is Learn BEFORE You Adopt
Bunnies can make wonderful companions — for the right family.
Before adopting, think about:

🌱 Do we have enough safe space for a rabbit to exercise and explore?
🌱 Can our family afford food, supplies and veterinary care?
🌱 Is there a rabbit-savvy veterinarian near us?
🌱 Are we prepared for a commitment that could last 10+ years?
🌱 Does everyone in our family understand what rabbits really need?
If the answer isn’t yes yet, that’s okay.
Learning first and waiting until your family is truly ready is one of the most responsible choices an animal lover can make.
